General Information

The Madison Soccer Association (MSA) is an adult soccer league based in Madison, WI. The MSA season runs from September to June each year. The fall half of the season typically runs from the week after Labor Day until late October or early November. The spring half of the season typically runs from early to mid April until mid to late June.

The MSA also runs the "Mad City Cup" concurrently with the September to June season. This is a knockout tournament in which all teams from all divisions are eligible to participate and the draw is made at random (no seeding). The championship game of the tournament is usually played the Friday prior to the end of the regular season.

Generally, the league consists of two divisions with roughly eight teams in each division. The top four teams in each division advance to in a play-off in June.

Teams may have up to twenty-two players on their roster at any given time. A three referee system is used for all games. Games are played on Sundays with occasional Saturday and weekday games. Mad City cup games are played on Saturdays. Games are played in the greater Madison area depending on field availability and cost.

This website has all the current league information, with schedules, game results, standings, cautions, and contact information.

New Teams

All new teams start in the second division (unless the board members and managers vote a team into the first division). The winner of the second division has the option to be promoted to the first division at the end of each season. If they choose to be promoted the last place team from the first division may be relegated to the second division (depending on the number of teams in each division).

A new team can start in either half of the season. This means either September or April. A team choosing to start halfway through the season is at a significant disadvantage to make the play-offs that season but is not prohibited from participating (if they earn enough points they will be in). That team is also not eligible to participate in the Mad City Cup that season as the draw and initial rounds take place in the fall.

How much does it cost

Fees can be changed by vote of all league managers.

How to register players

Each player on your team must be registered with the league prior to playing in any game. A team found to be fielding players who are not registered with the league will at a minimum forfeit that game (see by-laws for additional information).
